Volunteer Opportunities

If you are looking to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged children living in the northwest and western suburbs, there are a number of opportunities to get involved with WACO. The children we work with are all living at or below poverty level.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of WACO. Without your help, we simply cannot do all the things we do each year. At WACO, we are all volunteers. We do not have any paid positions. From the president on down, we all help whenever and wherever we can. Whether it be as a committee member or as a volunteer on the day of an event, we hope you will consider joining us.

If you cannot volunteer, please consider making a donation. A full 97 cents of every dollar we raise goes directly to help the kids.

High school students are encouraged to join us for part 3 of the Thanksgiving Food Drive, and both Christmas Shopping Tours. School clubs and organizations are also welcome to hold their own charity drives that coincide with ours.

“Steak” Your Claim Meat Raffle – This is set for Saturday, April 29, 1-4PM. We need people to help with registration, sell raffle tickets, help the emcee, give out prizes, etc. Don’t know what a meat raffle is? Check out our commercial from 2015 https://youtu.be/tNk68ZfD9zY. You must be 21 to volunteer. Volunteers needed: 8-12.

Read To Succeed Children’s Book Drive Part 1 – This runs 4.24.17 – 5.6.17. Prior to this we ask area businesses and schools to put up collection boxes and to encourage their employees/students to contribute. Please let us know if your company or school would be willing to do this. We also need 4-5 volunteers to deliver the collection boxes around 4.24.17.

Read To Succeed Children’s Book Drive Part 2 – Once the book drive is over we need volunteers to pick up the collection boxes and bring them to a location in Barrington. From there WACO will sort and distribute them. We’ll be doing this the week of May 8. Volunteers needed: 6-8.

FootballMania® – Volunteers will sell $20 cards to their family, friends, co-workers, etc. from the last Sunday in July until the first regular game of the NFL season. Each card gives the buyer 187 chances to win over a 17-week period. We typically award $1500-$2000 in prize money each season. WACO keeps $14 for every card that’s sold. Volunteers typically sell 5-20 cards. FYI, you are NOT on the hook if you take tickets and are unable to sell them. Volunteers needed: 20-30.

SuperMatch® – Volunteers will sell sets of $20 cards to their family, friends, co-workers, etc. from the middle of November until the Super Bowl. Volunteers typically sell 5-20 sets. FYI, you are NOT on the hook if you take tickets and are unable to sell them. Volunteers needed: 20-30.

Thanksgiving Food Drive Part 1 – We’re trying to help feed more than 200 poverty level families who live in our area, so we need as much community involvement here as possible. During the month of November we ask area businesses and schools to put up collection boxes and to encourage their employees/students to contribute non-perishable food items. Please let us know if your company or school would be willing to help us collect food. We also need 6-8 volunteers to deliver the collection boxes.

Thanksgiving Food Drive Part 2 – On the Friday before Thanksgiving we visit each collection site, load the food onto a truck and bring it over to the Schaumburg Township Building. We need several able-bodied people to help with this task. The Schaumburg High School Varsity Football team unloads the truck at the end of their school day. We usually start around 8:30AM and finish by 3:30PM.

Thanksgiving Food Drive Part 3 – We do this on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Volunteers arrive at the Schaumburg Township Building at 7AM to help sort, count and distribute the food. We’re usually finished by 11AM or sooner. Volunteers needed: 50+

Toy Drive Part 1 – This runs from just before Thanksgiving through sometime in December. We need area businesses and schools to put up collection boxes and encourage their employees/students to donate unwrapped toys. Please let us know if your company/school would be willing to do this. We also need 4-5 volunteers to deliver the collection boxes Thanksgiving week.

Toy Drive Part 2 – Once the toy drive is over we need volunteers to pick up the toys and bring them to various places where they will be distributed to local children who otherwise might not get any presents this holiday season. The dates vary, but all will be in December. Volunteers needed: 6-8.

Toy for Tots Dinner – The T4T Dinner is held the second Thursday in December. We need volunteers for set up, registration, silent auction, sell raffle tickets, draw winning tickets, hand out prizes, etc. We also need a photographer and a videographer. Set up usually starts around 2:30PM and the event itself runs from 5:30-10:30PM. Shift times: 2:30-5:30, 5:00-7:00, 8:00-10:30. You must be 21 to volunteer. Volunteers needed: 15-20.

Christmas Shopping Tours – The tours take place on the first two Saturdays in December at the Walmart store in Elk Grove Village and Elgin respectively. Between the two tours WACO takes 500+ preschoolers shopping and then wraps the gifts. Bilingual volunteers are needed, particularly those who speak Spanish. Some volunteers will take the children shopping, while others will wrap the gifts. There is no volunteer pre-registration for either shopping tour. Each event starts at 7AM and is typically finished by 11AM. Volunteers should arrive early and sign in. We need 400+ volunteers each day.

After Hours – Several times throughout the year WACO host After Hours gatherings as various locations. The establishments usually donate a percentage of what our guests spend on food and drink back to WACO. We usually collect something for the kids, such as hats, mittens, socks, etc. in lieu of an admission fee. We need 3-4 people to help at registration and to sell raffle tickets.

Join A Committee – If you would like to get more involved why not join a committee? We are always looking for new ideas. The following committees are accepting new members: Meat Raffle, Golf Outing, Wingfest, Food Drive and Toys for Tots Dinner.

Grant Writing – There are lots of grants available, with various forms to be completed. We need someone to help with this project.

Make A Donation – We realize not everyone has the time to volunteer. If you would like to make a donation there are several ways to do this. Click Here .
